Chances are you’ve never heard of Bishop. While its more famous neighbor to the northwest, Mammoth Lakes (a training haven for elites like Meb Keflezighi), may overshadow this remote Eastern Sierra enclave, Bishop packs as much small-town charm as it does vertical relief. The region has mining roots, but is ideally situated for adventure.

“There’s more than a lifetime’s worth of trails to explore,” says Jeff Kozak, an ultra marathoner and salesperson at the local running shop, Sage to Summit. “It’s an unparalleled expanse of mountains and wilderness.”
